Camouflage Therapy And Dermatologic Skin Care

Joyce Allsworth & Victoria Rayner Discuss Critical Perspectives of Cosmetic Camouflage©2000-2007

During the 1950’s Joyce Allsworth a nursing aide working with the British Red Cross painstakingly researched and implemented the concept of remedial skin  camouflage within the United Kingdom and, well beyond. Allsworth dedicated her professional life to training members of the British Red Cross with special techniques to help burn survivors  to normalize their appearance. In the beginning, most were young men with horrific disfigurements who had served in the armed forces returning home to a different reality because their injuries had left them forever, physically altered.  The pioneering effort Ms. Allsworth made and what she discovered in trying to minimize their scars (from numerous failed and successful cosmetic camouflage applications) resulted in a working manual she wrote that was recommended to Ms. Rayner who also was making strides in using camouflage to fill gaps in treatment protocols in caring for dermatology and reconstructive surgery patients in American university-hospitals. Ms. Allsworth's book was loaned to Ms. Rayner by a surgical nurse who at the time was performing collagen injections and referring her patients to Ms. Rayner's clinically-run skin care facility.

So inspired was Rayner by Ms. Allsworth's firsthand accounts of her patient care experiences - that Ms. Rayner decided to follow suit and assist others with what she was learning about working with patients in clinical environments. Ms. Rayner's textbook Clinical Cosmetology became the first teaching textbook for cosmetology & nursing instructors & is still the companion to Ms. Allsworth's guidebook and the most frequently referenced source for information on clinically-based esthetic & camouflage applications worldwide.

When Ms. Rayner first completed what became a four year writing endeavor - she begin to correspond with England's most regarded expert on camouflage modalities. The two developed a mutual respect for one another's cosmetic rehabilitation strategies and agreed to discuss their diverse application methods. They planned a face-to-face meeting and Ms. Rayner flew over to London to confer with her. At the time Ms. Allsworth was already in the last stages of fighting a terminal illness. She was too ill to take the train into London so she suggested Ms. Rayner come to see her privately at her home in the English countryside.

For over eight hours the two women shared stories and details into their clinical approaches and patient care strategies. Ms. Allsworth talked about her vision for the future of cosmetic rehabilitation and the work they were pioneering in their two countries. Ms. Rayner was highly-influenced by the mentoring she received from Joyce that day and what she learned from her struggles.  Ms. Allsworth warned Ms. Rayner about the importance of continuing to convince the medical community that cosmetic rehabilitation is more than a technique and that for the sake of patients it needs to be a medical subspecialty and it is - its own highly-specialized field.

The knowledge the two women exchanged that day afforded Ms. Rayner the extra drive and persistence required to spend another 13 years writing about the concepts of caring for special patients and their special needs. The outcome is what is now a series of distance education training and working manuals which have became the basis for the first-and-only Registered United States Patent Trade Service Mark for esthetic practice experts and the foundation for seven separate certification courses approved for continuing education units (transferable into college credits) for Registered Nurses & the training of medical esthetic practice experts. Ms. Rayner is seen here in the photograph brainstorming with the legendary Ms. Allswoth just shortly before her death - a moment in time - Rayner claims, that forever changed her perceptions of camouflage and cosmetic rehabilitation therapy.

Admission Requirements

Due to the depth of understanding required and all the facets covered in this program a pre-application interview is a prerequisite for this particular certification course.

The goal of camouflage therapy is to support patients' independence and their efforts to regain control by learning how to normalize their own appearance through the use of highly-developed intellectual skills and the systematic process involving the transference of in-depth knowledge of color recognition and custom-blending enabling patients to confidently work with cosmetic pigments & bases to produce the most inconspicuous outcome possible with the greatest ease. The ability to communicate this process and make it appear effortless is the basis for this highly-specialized approach. It is this opportunity for personal discovery that separates this work from other hands-on, tactile focused approaches - therefore, prior knowledge of in-depth critical reasoning skills relating to camouflage therapy applications is indicated & is essential. Potential trainees with high-levels of makeup application expertise may require more special attention & may wish to investigate their options and perhaps seriously consider the instructor-led, private tutor assisted, distance learning version our institute's offer.
